Life Details
Background: Raised in the small town of Tarusa, known for its idyllic scenery, Avel's upbringing was about as peaceful as it gets for someone facing down a death duel. It helped that he was in a decidedly middle-of-the-road situation for a young Vorinsky -- paired with a cousin who was just about his equal, and who was neither a close friend nor a feared enemy, just someone who he needed an edge to beat.

A talented invoker, he found that edge when he discovered the spirit of an old wishing well, which he was able to bind to his will using a quirk of the spirit's ruleset -- it was compelled to obey the wishes of anyone to whom it owed a debt. With the added oomph of Avel's command over spirits, he was able to secure the spirit as a kind of lucky charm -- it influenced the reality around him to make things come out as he pleased, within reason.

This is not really how you were supposed to treat a spirit, but Avel didn't have many invoker role models in his life, and besides, he figured he'd free it after the Sealing. Desperate times and desperate measures and all that.

But for the spirit's part, it was rather... resentful. It didn't fully understand humans, but it knew them through their wishes, which served as a kind of distorted mirror into their hearts. After long enough steeped in the whims and wills of others, it was anxious to exert its own will on the universe.

The closest it could come was the ability to interpret the wishes as it pleased -- if it wanted, it could find some hint of darkness and make a wish backfire on the wisher.

And so when Avel finally stood victorious over his vanquished cousin, and the horror inevitably hit that he had taken a human life, the spirit saw an opportunity. For just a moment, Avel was filled with remorse, and wished he could disappear. The spirit was listening for just such a wish, and it seized the opportunity.

Avel did disappear, the spirit taking his place and joining in the mixing of souls and lifeforce that takes place after any Sealing. The result was a creature that was arguably human -- but possessed the soul of the wishing well spirit.

It eagerly took his place, curious about the world of humans that it now could move freely and explore. In order to help conceal what had happened, the new "Avel" feigned amnesia brought on by the trauma of the Sealing, and quickly requested a transfer of schools in order to get far away from Avel's friends and family and avoid being caught out as a completely different entity.

And that's how he arrived at Paracelsus, a student who is not quite exactly what he seems!

Personality: Avel-the-Spirit is defined by a blend of exuberant enthusiasm and utter cynicism and resentment. Now that he is in the world, he wants to enjoy it, but he's not entirely free. He still feels wishes all around him, and when he's being inattentive, he might take on the will of another person and act out their impulses. It's even worse if he somehow becomes indebted to someone -- the compulsion to fulfill their wish in SOME fashion will be almost impossible to resist.

This is a source of amusement, if he's in a good mood, and immense frustration if he isn't.

Generally speaking, he wants to experience things, and will try to forge friendships in order to widen his opportunities to learn about and explore human things. Internally, though, he's hesitant about humans themselves, and isn't sure if he likes them or simply sees them as a means to an end. For the most part, they've been demanding abstractions pushing him around, and he's formed some uncomplimentary opinions about their natures from his wish-related insights into the human psyche.

For the reasons mentioned above, he's averse to favors from others, fearing their symbolic power to potentially indebt him, and would rather be a helper than helped. That is, unless he feels he's being imposed upon -- he's done plenty of favors for humans for one lifetime, in his opinion.

He's a bit jealous of and curious about the bonds between humans, since many wishes dealt with forming or strengthening bonds, making them seem like a worthwhile thing to have. However, he doesn't quite have the normal human empathy that causes genuine bonds to form, seeing himself as another category of being without any underlying kindship that comes from simply being human.

Flaws: Since he's more of a tourist in the human world than a true resident, and harbors a grudge against humankind, he's not the most trustworthy person in the world, and may well give way to the temptation to grant the darker sides of the wishes he senses, or simply sabotage people because they probably deserve it. His mild simmering resentment could easily give way to wanting revenge -- and he's rather motivated to find a way to achieve full free will, even if it happened to be at others' expense.

On a lighter note, he just plain doesn't know how to human very well, attempting to use "amnesia" to cover for a lack of familiarity with countless ordinary concepts, cultural references, history, etc. His school performance is comically bad, although parents and teachers alike are trying to be understanding because of his situation.

Magic and Skill Details
Magic and Skills:
Magic skill 1: Invoking. As a spirit who has been mistreated, though, he's more likely to use this for communication than to ask for aid -- although his wish-granting ruleset applies only to humans, so he wouldn't become hopelessly indebted to other spirits if he did call on them for help.

Magic skill 2: Channeling, with an affinity for earth, weather, and water. The original Avel was actually more of a fire guy, but he's hoping no one will notice.

Magic skill...3: Enhancing, with a focus on strength. But as a delightful bonus to this, he's clumsy as shit because he's only been human for a few months. Shit may get broken while he's working on his coordination.

...The real Avel had mundane skills, but spirit Avel "forgot" them. So sad.
